Interim Government Led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus Takes Oath Amid National Crisis

In the wake of the unprecedented political crisis following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government, Bangladesh has seen the formation of an interim government under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The newly constituted government, comprising 17 distinguished members from various fields, aims to navigate the country through this challenging period.

As the leader of this interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus brings with him a legacy of pioneering microcredit and microfinance through the establishment of Grameen Bank, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. Dr. Yunus has also served on the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation and has been the recipient of numerous national and international honors, including from the United States.

Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed

Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, the former 9th Governor of the Bangladesh Bank, is recognized for implementing critical reforms in the banking sector during his tenure. He began his career as a lecturer in Economics at Dhaka University before transitioning into various administrative roles within Bangladesh.

Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain

Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, a former Election Commissioner of Bangladesh, brings a wealth of experience from his military career and his expertise as a security and defense analyst. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Sonali Bank and led the first Bangladeshi military delegation to Germany.

Dr. Md Nazrul Islam (Asif Nazrul)

Dr. Md Nazrul Islam, also known as Asif Nazrul, is a law professor and civil society activist with a strong focus on constitutional and international legal issues. His work has been recognized globally, and he has contributed to significant conferences on constitutional reform and good governance.

Adilur Rahman Khan

A prominent human rights activist and founder of Odhikar, Adilur Rahman Khan has been a strong advocate for human rights in Bangladesh. He has served as a Deputy Attorney General and holds a Master’s degree in Law from both the University of Dhaka and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

AF Hassan Ariff

Senior Advocate AF Hassan Ariff, who has been practicing law since 1970, served as the Attorney General of Bangladesh and later as the Law Adviser in the caretaker government. His extensive legal career includes significant contributions to Bangladesh’s legal framework.

Md Touhid Hossain

Md Touhid Hossain, a former Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, has had a distinguished career in diplomacy, including serving as the High Commissioner to South Africa and as Principal of the Foreign Service Academy. His contributions to Bangladesh’s foreign relations are well-regarded.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Chief Executive of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), is a leading environmental advocate. Her work extends to global environmental law networks, and she is a respected voice on environmental issues in South Asia.

Supradip Chakma

Supradip Chakma, Chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board, has served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Vietnam and Mexico. His diplomatic career includes significant postings in Europe and Asia, representing Bangladesh’s interests abroad.

Farida Akhter

Farida Akhter is a researcher and founder of UBINIG, an organization that promotes biodiversity-based farming systems. Her work has impacted over 300,000 farming families in Bangladesh, and she is an active columnist on environmental and women’s issues.

Nahid Islam

Nahid Islam is a student activist who played a significant role in the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement, which later evolved into a non-cooperation movement leading to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. He is a sociology student at Dhaka University.

Asif Mahmud

Asif Mahmud, a key coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination Movement, is a linguistics student at Dhaka University. His leadership in student activism has been instrumental in recent political changes in Bangladesh.
