Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh) [India], August 21: A 60-year old man-died after allegedly jumping into a fire pit (Peerla Gundam) owned by Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh As part of the celebrations of the Muharram festival, police said.

The incident occurred on Thursday and according to Owk Police, Deputy Inspector-Jagadeeswar Reddy, the man was very drunk. Venkata Subbaiah (60 years old) at Kashipuam Village in Mandal, Owk Village, Kurnool District, is a chronic alcoholic. On Thursday evening,

he went to the village of Sunkesula to visit the Peerla Gundam (fire pit) organized on the eve of Muharram.

He was drunk and tried several times to jump into the fire. However, local people and police managed to arrest him twice, when the police were out of sight, Venkata Subbaiah suddenly jumped into the fire pit, he added. Bystanders and police immediately rushed him out of the fire pit, but he suffered burns and died.

Owk Police have recorded one case of unnatural death under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act (CrPc).
