The students were served ‘khichdi’ (a rice preparation which is a standard meal in midday meal scheme) prepared by Rajani self help groups which have been given the contract for the school.
“The meal was consumed by the headmaster, four teachers and 120 students of class VIII, IX and X of Rhambhau Mhalgi secondary school. Soon they developed stomach ache and started vomiting post which they were admitted to Bharati hospital in Katraj,” said Minakshi Raut, deputy director of education, Pune region.
The food samples have been given for testing in the government laboratory, said Raut. “Once the food sample results come in, we will be sending the report to the commissioner of education who will take appropriate action against the self help group. Till the report comes however, the same SHG will provide food to the school. We have already issued a warning to the SHG post today’s incident,” added Raut.
“A total 22 students and 1 teacher were rushed to Bharati hospital after they complained of vomiting and nausea. Of them, four students have been admitted and remaining were treated and discharged on out-patient department (OPD) basis. The condition of one of the four admitted students is slightly serious as he has become drowsy. Hence, we have put him in the hospital’s ICU as a precautionary measure,” said pediatrician Sanjay Lalwani, medical director of Bharati Hospital.
