Flood Incapacitated Rangamati Roads, Cast Ashored 3,000 Families

Consistent heavy rainfall and flash floods from the hills has been severely affecting Baghaichhari upazila in Rangamati.

“20 villages of 8 different unions and 1 municipality have been engulfed in flood water” as per the statement of Upazila administration,

Approximately 10,000 people of 3000 families are now trapped in floodwater.

In addition, three major roads: Rangamati-Chittagong, Ghagra-Boraiyachhari-Bandarban, and Rangamati-Khagrachhari has been under landslides. This occurred at 21 location and the Kengalchhari area of the Rangamati-Khagrachhari road has been flooded which is causing road closure.

According to the locals, following low lying locations including Baghaichhari upazila, Sadar, Rupkari union, Baghaihat union, Sajek union, Marishya union, Baghaihat municipality, Khedarmara union, and several neighborhoods within the municipality such as College Para, Muslim Block, Madrasa Para, Haji Para, Babu Para, F Block, Kachalong Bazar Old Marishya, Master Para, Dhebar Para, Madhyama Para, West Muslim Block, Bottali, and Lailya Ghonas, has went under water.

“The water level of the Kachalong River has risen due to heavy rainfall in recent days, leading to flooding in Sajek, Rupkari, and parts of the Baghaichhari municipality.” Said Shamim Hossain, a resident of Baghaichhari. Thousands of people have been trapped by the rising waters.

Furthermore, Bishwajit Chakraborty the Secretary of Sajek Union Parishad said that the floodwaters has marooned 200 families in Sajek Union. He also added that four metric tons food grains have been allocated and khichuri will be distributed amongst the affected families.

Four metric tons of food grains have been allocated for the affected families, and khichuri (a traditional rice dish) will be distributed among the flood victims, he added.

At the same time, Rangamati Roads and Highways Division Executive Engineer Shabuj Chakma said that continuous rainfall has caused landslides on the Rangamati-Chittagong, Ghagra-Boraiyachhari-Bandarban, and Rangamati-Khagrachhari roads, with 21 landslides recorded.

He also said that the Kengalchhari area of the Rangamati-Khagrachhari road has been submerged, halting vehicular movement.

He further mentioned that although the road was cleared and reopened after a landslide blocked the road for an hour in the Ghagra area of the Rangamati-Chittagong road, efforts are ongoing to clear debris from all affected spots.

Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shirin Akhter said that 55 shelters have been opened in the upazila, with 22 shelters already housing 1,500 people from 450 flood-affected families.

The district administration has provided relief supplies, and efforts are being made to distribute dry food to those affected, she said.

Most roads in the 8 unions and the municipality have been submerged, disrupting internal road communication. Additionally, the Marishya-Dighinala road is temporarily closed due to landslides, Shirin Akhter added.

Executive Engineer of the Rangamati Roads and Highways Division Shabuj Chakma said that weeklong rains inundated those major transports like Rangamati- Chittagong, Ghagra-Boraiyachhari-Bandarban and Rangamati-Khagrachhari transport channel where as 21 landslides were reported.

He also added that the Kengalchhari area which is located at the Rangamati-Khagrachhari highway has been flooded and the transportation through motorized vehicles have been stopped. But this road at Ghagra on the Rangamati-Chittagong route was cleared and opened after remaining blocked for an hour due to landslide Though the other roads are opened yet work is still continuing to remove the debris from the affected areas.

The Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Baghaichhari upazila is Shirin Akhter Speaking on the current situation, she said, currently, there are 55 shelters opened in the upazila, out of which 22 shelters are already sheltering 1,500 persons belonging to 450 flood affected families. The supplies and dry foods are distributed by the district administration to those in need.

She also said that most of the roads within eight unions and the municipality have been flooded hence disconnecting people’s road transport within the area. Also, due to landslides, the Marishya-Dighinala road section is still under closure for now.
