The citizens in Dhaka are coming out from the comfort of their houses to patrol their respective areas as the rate of robberies has increased. Places like Uttara, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, and Old Dhaka have seen people wearing helmets, shields and carrying bamboo sticks for safety as police action is absent most of the times. The Army has also at times been involved in these operations mainly in Mirpur, Pallabi and Mohammadpur.
People use social networks as a way to notify about the emergencies and ask for help. Aggravating this unfortunate reality, in the ECB Chattar area, there have been cases of house break-ins by burglars wielding sharp instruments including knives and machetes that forced community and military assistance culminating into the arresting of several suspects.
The incidence has been circulating on the internet through videos and news and mosques in the region have been putting warnings that people should be extra careful. Faisal from Arshinagar was annoyed saying that thing has become beyond control. Locals of Mohammadpur were able to chase the robbers at 12:30 a. m. with sticks, other students like Pinaki Roy of Uttara have been roaming all night with batons thus, they are demanding that the police must act more robustly.
Mirpur’s Chaitanya Chandra Halder also extended the stress from robbery that squeezed the sleep. The issue of police inefficiency has been made apparent by the many complaints from the public and outrage for change. In response, the newly appointed Inspector General of Police Md Mainul Islam has asked the officers to resume their duty and maintain law and order situation. The recent police press release highlighted the fact that citizens’ assistance in addressing the difficulties happening to the officers is working hard.
